The boy gets into the car with his boots still on and his shin pads in his lap, and the first thing he does, the way boys have done since cars had radios, is plug his phone into the cable. Something with an enormous chorus comes up loud. He is fifteen and he sings the second line of it without a shred of embarrassment, which is one of the great sights of the world.
And her hand goes out. Not off. Down. Two notches, the same two notches it always is, and then back onto the wheel, and she asks him whether the essay came back yet. He tells her about the essay. He did not notice her hand. Nobody has ever noticed her hand.
Because she has a setting. It has been her setting for a long time and it works beautifully. Above the line, music gets in. Below the line she keeps it at, she can hear it perfectly well, she can even like it, and it does not reach the place it used to reach. She did not sit down one afternoon and decide this. It happened once, and then it happened again, and now that is simply where the dial lives in that car.
Some of you keep yours on the radio. Some of you keep it on how long you stay in a room after the conversation turns, or on how much of a photograph you let yourself look at, or on which songs you skip in the first four seconds without ever thinking of it as skipping. Whatever yours is, you know precisely which dial it is, and roughly when you set it, and here is the part that does not get said out loud very often. It worked. That is not a confession. That is engineering. Something came at you that there was no way to carry at full volume, so you turned yourself down two notches, and you got through it, and you have been running at that level ever since.
The dial did its job
Let me start where a lot of people are afraid this kind of page will not start. Nobody is going to call your dial a sin, and I am not going to call it one either.
It is not laziness, it is not hardness of heart, and it is not a failure of anything. It is what a person does when the noise is more than the room can take. The whole family thinks you are just quiet in the car. Your colleagues think you are unflappable. What none of them can see is that the reason you can be trusted in a crisis is that you turned the gain down years ago and never turned it back up, and that trick has been paying its own way ever since.
So hear this before anything else happens on this page. You are safe with God, and that safety is not a thing to arrange before He comes near. Scripture says the One He sent does not break what is already bent, and the Holy Spirit is not a second, rougher hand that comes in afterwards and undoes the gentleness. It is the same kindness the whole way down.
A bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice.Isaiah 42:3
He does not break what is already bending
Look at what those two objects actually are.
A bruised reed is a reed that has already been stood on. It is bent, it will not play, and any farmer would snap it and cut a fresh one, because reeds are cheap and a bent one is a nuisance. A wick that is barely burning is smoking, not shining. It is doing the annoying half of what a wick does and none of the useful half, and the sensible thing is to pinch it out and start again.
Both are damaged. Both are still there. And the verse is not a promise about how quickly He will restore them. It is a sentence about what He will not do to them while they are like that. You have a God who has already ruled out the rough version of this, and He ruled it out in writing. That is the promised word about His own Servant, and His Spirit is the one who keeps it true in the room rather than true in theory, which is why nothing in you has been snapped so far.
The kindest waking in the book
There is a man in Scripture who lay down under a broom tree in a desert with nothing left, and asked God to end it.
What God did next is worth reading slowly, because it is nothing anyone expects. No correction. No sermon. No question about his commitment. A messenger touched him, and said arise and eat, and there was bread and a jar of water beside his head. He ate. And then, and this is the line that undoes people, he lay down again. God let him go back to sleep. Only after the second sleep and the second meal did anything get said at all, and what got said was that the journey was too much for him, which he already knew and had never once been told kindly.
You have not been left to wake yourself up, and you were never going to be shaken awake either. The word shows God feeding a man before addressing him, and it is His Spirit doing the same unhurried thing in you, at your volume, in your kitchen, for as long as it takes.
Nobody is taking the covering off you today
So let me be plain about what this page is not doing, because it is only fair to say so before you go any further.
It is not asking you to feel anything. It is not asking you to name the thing to another human being, ever. It is not asking you to take the dial off its setting, and it is not going to be disappointed in two weeks if the dial is still there. God is not standing over you waiting for a demonstration.
You are being woken by somebody safe, and that is already happening, gently, in the way you have started noticing things again. Scripture calls Him the one who will not cry aloud or lift His voice in the street, and His Spirit works exactly the same way, under the volume rather than over it.
If any of this is heavier than a page can hold, and especially if tonight feels dangerous, please put me down and reach a person. In the United States, 988 answers by call or text at any hour. Elsewhere, your emergency number or a national support line will do the same, and a search for a crisis line in your own country finds it in a minute. A real human being tonight is worth more than the best paragraph I could write.
Nothing is being pulled off you. Something is being offered under the covering, which is where you can actually receive it.
You are held right now by a God who has never once used force on a bruised thing, and that is yours today whether you feel a single thing while you read it or not. His word says it and His Spirit is carrying it, and the fact that you have got this far down a page about waking up is not nothing. It is the half inch.
Declare this over yourself
Say these sitting down if that is easier, in an ordinary voice. You do not need volume for this, and that is not a compromise; the God being spoken to is the one who does not shout in the street, so a sentence at the level you can manage is fully audible in heaven. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so this standing belongs to you already and is not being borrowed for the occasion. Scripture is under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live, never the strength of your voice. And the pace of the rest of this is His timing and not a schedule either of us is keeping.
- Setting I turned myself down to, you kept the noise out and you have never once kept God out. Scripture says He does not break a bruised reed or snuff out a smoldering wick, and I say in the name of Jesus that He has been inside this car at my volume the whole time.
- Fear of what comes back if I wake, you do not set the pace in here. The God who fed a worn out man and let him sleep again before He said a single word is the one waking me, and He has never yet moved faster than the person He was waking.
- Lord, You are waking me gently and You have not pulled one corner of this covering off me. It is written that You do not cry aloud in the street, and Your Spirit is speaking under my volume where I can actually hear it. I thank You, because I am safe with You today, and I am leaving that where it is with Your blessing on it.
