He Is StirringProverbs 20:27

A Candle Going Through the Rooms

This message is for A woman who has been humming the same few notes all week and finding herself close to something she cannot name, who wants to know what is happening in her without having it interpreted for her.

The plant on the windowsill in a tin that used to have biscuits in it has been there since her mother's house was cleared, and it should not still be alive, and it is.

Evening. Lamp on in the corner, the good one with the shade that makes everything the color of tea. Music on low because there is always music on low in this house. Two of her girls round, one on the floor with her back against the sofa.

And she is doing the thing again.

Four notes. She has been humming them all week. Not a song she knows. Not the radio, not church, not anything she can trace. Four notes, and every time she gets to the fourth one something in her comes right up to the surface and she has to stop and do something with her hands.

Her daughter noticed on Tuesday. Said, what is that? And she said, I have no idea, and they both laughed, and she has thought about it every day since.

Because it is not really about a tune. Something is going on in her. She has felt it for weeks, moving around like somebody walking through a house at night, and she does not have a word for it and she does not know whether to be glad or worried.

Come dance one step and then sit down with me, sister. Because there is a proverb about a candle and I think it describes exactly what has been walking around in you.

A candle, going through the rooms

One verse. Solomon, at his most compressed.

The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.Proverbs 20:27

Three things and every one of them is worth holding.

The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord. The deepest part of a person is a light, and the light belongs to Him. Not borrowed. His candle, in you.

Searching. Present participle. It is doing it now and it keeps doing it. This is not an inspection that happens on a date.

All the inward parts. Everywhere. Rooms you have not opened. Rooms you forgot were in the house.

Now hold that beside four notes and something rising in you at the fourth one. That is not a mystery you are failing to solve. That is a description of what a candle does when it goes through a house: it lights things that were there all along, one at a time, in whatever order it walks.

You are being gone through by a light that belongs to Him, and the searching in that verse is continuous rather than an inspection with a date on it. That is not a comfortable reading of a stern proverb; Proverbs 20:27 calls it His candle and puts the searching in the present tense, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a compressed old line and stands it up in a front room with a lamp the color of tea. Something walking around in you is not a fault in the house. It is a light doing what light does.

Now the second half, which is the bit you have been braced for without admitting it.

You do not know whether to be glad or worried. And underneath that is an older question, which is what a light like that is going to find.

Notice the word Solomon used. He said candle. Not floodlight. Not searchlight. A candle is what a person carries when they are looking for something in a house at night, and it lights about a meter of room at a time, and the whole rest of the house stays dark until you get there.

That is the scale of it. He is not going to open every room in you tonight. He goes at candle speed.

You are being searched at the speed of a candle rather than a floodlight, and He has never once lit up more of a person than they could stand at once. Isaiah 42:3 says a bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that gentleness the manner of the searching rather than an exception to it.

What to do with four notes

Let me be practical, because you are a practical woman and this is where it lands or it does not.

You will want to identify the tune. You have probably already hummed it into your phone to see if it can find it. That is fine and it does not matter either way.

What matters more is what you do with the thing under the tune, and there are two ways to lose it. One is to explain it away, which you are tempted to do because you are sensible. The other is to build a whole thing on it, which you are not tempted to do, and good.

The third way is to bring it to God the way it is, unnamed and four notes long.

You are able to bring an unfinished thing to Him and have it received, and He has never once required a person to know what they were carrying. Psalm 139:23 says search me, O God, and know my heart, and that is a person inviting the candle rather than waiting to be caught by it, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an invitation like that a safe one to issue.

And here is the last piece, because you have a mouth and it has been humming all week.

Jesus said in Matthew 17:20 that faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, is enough to move it. The smallest seed there is. Not how well you understand your own week. That a person opens their mouth and says what God has said. You have that standing because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and speaking is the appointed way this works. We flip the switch. He sends the current.

The breakthrough

So here is where we are.

Four notes all week, something coming up in you at the fourth one, and a whole month of something moving around in you like a person walking through a house at night.

You are carrying His own candle, and what it is doing is searching gently rather than inspecting you. Proverbs 20:27 calls the spirit of man the candle of the Lord and puts the searching in the present tense, and Isaiah 42:3 gives the manner of it, and it is His Spirit who makes those one comfort in a front room rather than two verses. What this turns out to be and when, belongs to Him. I will not name your week for you.

You do not have to identify anything. No conclusion, no plan, no decision about what it means. Say the words below with the music still on low.

If the flatness has gone somewhere darker, and staying safe is genuinely in question for you, please call emergency services or a crisis line where you live, and get another person physically near you. That is not a failure of faith and it is not a break in this. It is one honest way of refusing to be alone with an evening.

Declare this over yourself

The ground under these words is Christ in you and you in Him, given to you and not achieved by you, so say them at the volume of an ordinary sentence. Scripture is what puts them in your mouth and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live. What this turns out to be and when belongs to Him, and none of it is a mark against you.

  1. Rush to name this before I have looked at it, you are slowed, because the candle of the Lord searches the rooms at His own pace. His word calls it a candle and not a floodlight, and a candle lights one meter of a house at a time.
  2. Bracing I have been doing about what a light like that would find, you are ended in the name of Jesus. I stand on the word that says a bruised reed shall he not break, which is the manner of the searching and not an exception to it.
  3. Lord, You are the One carrying the light and it is Your own candle in me. Your word has a man say search me and know my heart, and I am sitting in this room with the music on low, saying out loud that I am here.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
