Heavy With Sleep and They Still Saw Him

The tent is warm in the way marquees get, and somebody has propped the door flap open with a chair. Out on the grass the light has gone gold and low and everyone looks better than they have ever looked in their lives.

She is on table six with the cousins. She has laughed at the right moments. She said the right thing to the bride's mother about the flowers, and it was true, they are lovely, and she watched herself say it from somewhere just behind her own eyes.

The ceremony was two hours ago. During the vows she was standing in the third row with her hands folded and she was waiting, the way you wait for a lift to arrive, for something in her to move. Nothing came. Not sadness. Not joy. Just the ordinary noise of a room and a girl in it who was accurately doing the thing.

Now she is at a table with a slice of cake she has not touched, and the thought that has been circling all afternoon has finally landed, and it is this. Whatever God is doing in here, He is not doing it with me. Not while I am like this.

She would not say that out loud. It would sound dramatic and she is not dramatic. But she believes it, in the specific way you believe the things you have never tested, and she has been quietly stepping back from every room where God might be moving so as not to be the flat spot in it.

Hey. Before you take one more step back, I want to show you who was on that mountain and what state they were in, because I do not think you know.

The three who saw the glory were not sharp that night

The transfiguration is the brightest thing in the Gospels outside the resurrection. Jesus is changed in front of them, His face like the sun, Moses and Elijah standing there talking with Him.

And Luke, who is the careful one, tells us something the other accounts leave out.

But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory.Luke 9:32

Heavy with sleep. Not attentive. Not fasting and expectant on a hillside with their hearts prepared. Three grown men, dropping off on the ground, in the presence of the most concentrated glory any of them would see in their lives.

And the sentence does not end with them being sent down the mountain. It ends with they saw his glory.

You are not disqualified by heaviness, and the three men who saw the most glory in the Gospels were half asleep on the ground when it started. That is not encouragement I invented for a wedding; Luke 9:32 is deliberate about their condition and then reports what they saw anyway, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a mountain in Galilee and stands it up in a tent at half past six on a Saturday. Your state was never the entry requirement.

Now let me say the thing under it, because you have made a rule and the rule is wrong.

The rule you have made is that God moves toward the ones who are already lit, and away from the flat spot, so the loving thing is to keep the flat spot out of the way. It sounds like humility. It is actually a doctrine about God, and it is not a true one, and if you leave it alone it will keep you standing at the back of rooms for a long time.

Watch what Jesus does with the heaviness in that account. He does not comment on it. He does not use it as material afterward. Later in Gethsemane, when they sleep again at the worst possible moment, He says one sentence that ought to be tattooed on the inside of every tired believer's eyelids: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak (Matthew 26:41). That is not a rebuke. That is a diagnosis offered by somebody who is not surprised and not annoyed.

You have a willing spirit inside a tired frame, and He named that combination Himself without holding it against anybody. The written word puts those exact words in His mouth in Matthew 26:41, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes them off the page and makes them a fact about a young woman at table six. He is not put off. He has met this before, in His closest friends, on His worst night.

What actually woke them

Here is the part I love, and it is the reason I brought you to this mountain rather than another one.

Nothing in the text says the three worked themselves awake. There is no account of them rousing each other, no discipline applied, no resolve. Luke says they were heavy with sleep, and then he says when they were awake. The waking happens between two clauses and nobody is credited with it.

Which is exactly what you would expect, because glory is not something a person generates by concentrating. The light on that mountain was not produced by three attentive men. It was produced by Christ, and it woke them, and they saw it.

You are within reach of the same light that woke them, and it was never anybody's own effort that did the waking. John 1:9 says He is the true Light that lights every one that comes into the world, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries that light into a wedding, into a Tuesday, into a room where somebody is holding a slice of cake she has not touched. You are not the light source. You never were, and that is the good news, not the bad.

And then there is your mouth, and it matters more than your mood.

Jesus said in Matthew 17:20 that faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, is enough to move it. Notice the size He picked, deliberately, the smallest thing a farmer handles. Not the size of what you feel at a wedding. Just that a person opens their mouth and says what God has said. You have that standing because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and speaking is the appointed way it works. We flip the switch. He sends the current.
