The Kind One at the Traffic Lights

The light is red and there is a van in front with a phone number on the back doors and a sticker that says how am I driving, and she is looking at it without reading it.

Book bags in the footwell. Half a rice cake ground into the seat belt buckle, which she will deal with. The radio is on and has been on the whole way and she could not tell you one thing that has been said.

And then the thought that stops her, quietly, at a red light on a Tuesday: she does not remember the roundabout. She does not remember the bit past the garage. She has driven two miles with two children in the back and she was not there for any of it.

The light goes green.

Here is what happens next, and this is the actual thing this article is about. As she pulls away she thinks, briefly, about telling God. And in the same half second she puts it down again. Because if she brings it up, she thinks, what comes back will be a list. Be more present. Put the phone in the glove box. Get up earlier and pray first. Something to add.

She is not carrying much slack. She knows exactly what she can and cannot take on this week, and another instruction is not on the list. So she does what she has done for a while now, which is love God quietly at a distance where He cannot hand her anything.

If that is you at the lights, I want to sit in the passenger seat for a minute. Because the one time Jesus described His own manner, He used two words about Himself, and I do not think you have ever really let them be about you.

The only place He tells us what He is like on the inside

There are a hundred places where we are told what Jesus did. There is exactly one where He tells us what He is like in Himself, and He picks two words.

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.Matthew 11:29

Meek and lowly in heart. That is the whole self description. Not demanding. Not exacting. Not impatient with slow learners. He is describing His manner toward the people who come to Him with nothing left, and the manner is gentleness.

And look at what He hands over in the same sentence. A yoke, yes. But a yoke is what you put on an animal that is pulling something too heavy to pull alone, and the yoke in that image has two places in it. The whole point of the picture is that the load stops being carried by one.

You are being offered a fitted yoke and not another item on a list, and the One offering it described His own manner as gentle. That is not a soft reading dropped over a hard week; Matthew 11:29 has Him naming Himself meek and lowly in heart in His own words, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a first century farming picture and puts it in a car at a red light with rice cake in the seat belt. Whatever you were braced for, it is not what He is like.

Now let me say the thing you have been quietly believing, because naming it out loud takes most of its power away.

You have been living as though every approach to God costs you something you cannot spare. So you keep the relationship warm and distant, the way you might keep a friendship going with somebody who always needs a lift somewhere. That is not rebellion. It is triage. You have been triaging God.

You have been protecting yourself from a demand He was never going to make, and He has been near you the whole time you were keeping your distance. The written word says His compassions fail not and are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22), and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a line that old and lands it inside a woman who has been managing her exposure to God for years. He has not been standing there with a clipboard waiting for you to have capacity.

What rest actually is in that sentence

The verse promises rest for the soul, and I want to be careful here, because that phrase gets used to sell people all sorts of things.

He does not say the driving stops. He does not say the school drop off gets shorter or the week gets lighter. The rest He names is unto your souls, which is the inside of a person, the part that has been braced. What is being offered is the end of the bracing, not the end of the work.

And notice who does the fitting. He says take my yoke, learn of me. It is His yoke, made by Him, and He is in it. You are not being handed equipment and pointed at a field.

You have a place beside Him rather than a task list from Him, and the yoke in that verse was never designed for one neck. Matthew 11:30 says His yoke is easy and His burden is light, and it is His Spirit who makes those two words operative in a body rather than admirable in a book. Easy is the word He chose. He picked it Himself.

And here is the last piece, because you have a mouth and it turns out to matter more than your capacity does.

Jesus said in Matthew 17:20 that faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, is enough to move it. Notice how little He asked for. Not the size of what you can spare this week. Not the amount of attention you can currently manufacture at eight forty in the morning. That a person opens their mouth and says what God has said. You have that standing because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and speaking is the appointed way this works. We flip the switch. He sends the current.
