The folding table has one leg shorter than the others and there is a beer mat under it that somebody put there four years ago and it has never been replaced, only occasionally straightened.
Corner of Chandler and Vine. Every Thursday from six, cups and a couple of urns and whatever the bakery could not sell. In the summer they get thirty. In February they get eleven and it is worth it for the eleven.
She started it. Nobody asked her to and nobody would have.
And she has prayed for this corner. Out loud, on her own, standing right here after everybody has gone and the table is folded, for years, by name, for the flats above the launderette and the two men who sleep in the doorway when the weather turns and the girl with the pushchair who will not look at anybody.
Nothing has changed. That is not self pity, it is a report. The flats are the flats. The doorway is the doorway. Nobody has been converted at her table and nobody has stopped drinking and the council did not fix the light.
She stood here last Thursday folding the legs in and thought: I have been asking for a river and I have not seen so much as a wet stone.
Sister, come stand under this light that does not work. Because there is a prophet on a mountain with his head between his knees and a servant running up and down, and I want you to hear what the servant finally saw.
Seven times, and then something the size of a hand
Three and a half years of drought. Elijah has just had the biggest day of his working life on Carmel and now he is on top of the mountain, bent over on the ground, praying for rain.
He sends his servant to look at the sea. Nothing. He sends him again. Nothing. Seven times.
And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand.1 Kings 18:44
Like a man's hand. Hold your hand up at arm's length against the sky and that is the size of the thing that ended a three year drought.
Now here is what I want you to see. Six times the servant looked at exactly the same sea and reported exactly the same nothing, and he was telling the truth every time. And on the seventh, what was there to be seen would have fitted behind a palm.
That is what a beginning looks like. Not a river. A smudge.
You are looking for a river when what He usually starts with is the size of a hand, and the servant who found it had reported nothing six times running. That is not a consolation prize dressed up as a promise; 1 Kings 18:44 measures it as a man's hand and treats that as the answer, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a mountain in Israel and stands it up on a corner with a beer mat under a table leg. Nothing is exactly what the beginning of something looks like from far enough away.
Now the second thing, and it is about your report.
You said nothing has changed and you meant the flats and the doorway and the council. Fine. But look at what you did not put in the report.
Eleven people in February. On a corner. In the cold. Who came, and were given something hot, by somebody who knew their name.
You did not count that because it has been going on so long it stopped registering as an event. Which is what happens to everything faithful. It becomes furniture.
You have been standing inside the answer for so long that you stopped seeing it as one, and eleven people in February is not nothing. Zechariah 4:10 asks who has despised the day of small things, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that question do its work on somebody who has been quietly despising her own faithfulness for years.
What the servant was actually sent for
One more thing, and it will change how you fold that table.
Elijah did not send the servant to make it rain. He sent him to look. The praying and the looking were separate jobs and the servant only ever had one of them.
That matters, because you have been carrying both. You have been praying for that corner and also, without meaning to, holding yourself responsible for the result, which is why the absence of a result has begun to feel like a verdict on you.
It is not yours. It never was. Elijah prayed and God sent the rain and the servant walked up a hill seven times and looked at the sea, and not one of those three jobs was the same job.
You are responsible for the asking and never once for the arriving, and the two have never been the same assignment. 1 Corinthians 3:6 says Paul planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that division of labor a rest rather than a technicality for a woman with an urn.
And here is the last piece, because you have a mouth and it has been working on that corner for years.
Jesus said in Matthew 17:20 that faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, is enough to move it. He picked the smallest thing on a farm to make exactly this point. Not the size of what you can currently see. That a person opens their mouth and says what God has said. You have that standing because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and speaking is the appointed way this works. We flip the switch. He sends the current.
So here is where we are.
You have prayed for this corner for years, out loud, alone, after everybody has gone, and you cannot point at a river.
You are being handed something the size of a hand, and that is what the answer looked like on the seventh trip up the mountain. 1 Kings 18:44 measures the beginning of a three year rain as a man's hand and 1 Corinthians 3:6 puts the increase on God's side of the work, and it is His Spirit who makes those one rest in a woman rather than two verses. What comes of it, what you see and when, belongs to Him. I will not manufacture a river for you.
You do not have to pray harder or differently. No new strategy for the corner, no promise about February. Say the words below with the table already folded.
If the flatness has gone somewhere darker, and staying safe is genuinely in question for you, please call emergency services or a crisis line where you live, and get another person physically near you. That is not a failure of faith and it is not a break in this. It is one honest way of refusing to be alone with an evening.
Declare this over yourself
The ground under these words is Christ in you and you in Him, given to you and not achieved by you, so say them at the volume of an ordinary sentence. Scripture is what puts them in your mouth and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live. What you see and when belongs to Him, and none of it is a mark against you.
- Nothing I have been staring at, you are not the whole report, because a hand sized cloud is still rain. His word measures the end of a three year drought as a little cloud like a man's hand.
- Responsibility for the result that I picked up without being handed it, you are put down in the name of Jesus. I stand on the word that says one plants and one waters but God gives the increase, and the increase was never on my table.
- Lord, You are the One who sends the rain and I am the one who was sent to look. Your word asks who has despised the day of small things, and I am standing on this corner with the legs folded in, saying out loud that I am here.
