The Reaching Forward That Is Not a Rebuke

This message is for A young woman scrolling back through years of her own posts who can see exactly when the lights went out behind her eyes, and who is using the evidence to prosecute herself.

The phone is face down on the carpet now, which is a decision she made about forty seconds ago and is quite pleased about.

Bedroom floor. Back against the side of the bed. Lamp on. Two friends staying over and both of them are here, one on the beanbag and one lying flat on the floor with her feet up the wall for reasons nobody has asked about.

They are laughing about something from earlier.

And she was, about four minutes ago, scrolling back. Not for anything. That is the thing about scrolling back, you are never looking for anything.

She got to a year that is roughly four years ago and she saw it. Not in one post. In the pattern. The captions get shorter. The face in the photographs stops arriving in the eyes. There is a point where a girl who used to write three paragraphs about a sunset starts posting a photograph with no caption at all, and it never really comes back.

And she can date it. And she has spent four minutes building a timeline with an accused in it.

Hey. Leave the phone where it is. Because there is a famous verse about forgetting what is behind, and I think you have been reading it as a rebuke, and it is a runner's word.

It is a running word, not a feelings word

Paul is writing to the Philippians and he is talking about himself, and he says this.

Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before.Philippians 3:13

Now the whole passage is athletic. He is talking about a race and a prize and pressing toward a mark. That is the register he is in.

And in a race, forgetting what is behind is not an emotional instruction. It is a physical one. A runner who turns to look at the track behind them slows down, loses form, and sometimes falls. The forgetting he is describing is about where your attention is pointed, not about whether you have feelings.

He is not telling anybody to stop caring about their history. He is telling them not to run backward.

You are being handed a runner's instruction rather than a rebuke about your feelings, and forgetting in that verse is about which way a person is facing. That is not a way of dodging the verse; Philippians 3:13 sits in an athletic passage about pressing toward a mark, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a race metaphor and lays it on a bedroom floor with a phone face down on the carpet. You are not being told you should have moved on. You are being told which direction to point.

Now the timeline, and I want to name what you are actually doing, because it is worth seeing.

You have used four years of your own posts to build a case. And the specific cruelty of that evidence is that you generated all of it yourself, at the time, without knowing it would be used this way.

Nobody else on earth has that archive. Nobody else could have built that case. You are the prosecution, the defense, the archive and the accused, in a bedroom, at eleven at night, with your friends four feet away laughing.

You are the only party running this case, and every piece of evidence in it was filed by you against yourself. Romans 8:1 says there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a verse that plain and applies it to a court that has never had a plaintiff.

What the shorter captions actually were

One more thing, and I want to say it carefully because I am not going to diagnose you and I cannot.

Something happened around then. You do not have to tell me and you may not even know what it was. Something in a person can go quiet after a hard stretch, or after a thing that should not have happened, or for reasons entirely of the body.

What I can tell you is what those shorter captions were not. They were not a moral decline. A girl posting a photograph with no caption is not a girl who stopped loving God.

She is a girl whose inside went quiet enough that the words stopped coming out, and that is a description of a condition and not a charge sheet.

You are looking at the evidence of something that happened to you rather than something you did, and those are not the same category. Psalm 103:14 says he knoweth our frame, he remembereth that we are dust, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that a live distinction in a young woman rather than a general truth about people.

And here is the last piece, because you have a mouth and it does more than caption things.

Jesus said in Matthew 17:20 that faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, is enough to move it. The smallest seed there is. Not how eloquent you were four years ago. That a person opens their mouth and says what God has said. You have that standing because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and speaking is the appointed way this works. We flip the switch. He sends the current.

The breakthrough

So here is where we are.

You built a case out of four years of captions getting shorter, and you are the only person in the building who has ever brought a charge.

You are being told which way to face rather than being told off, and the verse about forgetting sits in the middle of a race. Philippians 3:13 is athletic language about direction and Romans 8:1 says there is now no condemnation, and it is His Spirit who makes those one release on a bedroom floor rather than two verses in a book. What comes of those years and when belongs to Him. I will not tell you what happened to you and I will not put a date on God.

You do not have to fix anything tonight. No post, no explanation, no announcement, no decision about anything. Say the words below with the phone still face down.

If the flatness has gone somewhere darker, and staying safe is genuinely in question for you, please call emergency services or a crisis line where you live, and get another person physically near you. That is not a failure of faith and it is not a break in this. It is one honest way of refusing to be alone with a night.

Declare this over yourself

The ground under these words is Christ in you and you in Him, given to you and not achieved by you, so say them at the volume of an ordinary sentence. Scripture is what puts them in your mouth and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live. What comes of those years and when belongs to Him, and none of it is a mark against you.

  1. Prosecution I have been running with my own timeline as evidence, you are closed, because the reaching forward He gives is not a rebuke. His word puts that forgetting inside a race, and it is about which way a runner faces.
  2. Case built out of captions getting shorter, you are dismissed in the name of Jesus. I stand on the word that says He knoweth our frame, He remembereth that we are dust, and a quiet year is a condition and not a charge.
  3. Lord, You keep a record that does not fit in a phone. Your word says God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love, and I am sitting on my bedroom floor with the phone face down, saying out loud that I am here.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
