The Play He Watched Through Glass

This message is for A father at his daughter school play who filmed the whole of it and cannot describe a single moment of it, and who wants to be in his own family evenings rather than recording them from behind a screen.

The hall smells of floor polish and poster paint and about ninety people in coats. The scenery is a castle made of cardboard with the crenellations cut slightly wrong, and everybody in the room loves the crenellations.

She is the third narrator. Blue tabard, cardboard crown, a voice she has been practicing in the bathroom for two weeks. Her bit is forty seconds long and she has told him about it every day since the letter came home.

He has his phone up. Both arms out in front of him at the angle you hold them at, elbows locked, thumb on the red circle. He got her entrance. He got the whole forty seconds. He got the bit where she looked out at the seats to find him and he waved with his free hand and she went pink.

Afterward, in the crush by the door with the coats, his wife says: the bit where she forgot and then just kept going, that was my favorite.

And he says yes. And he does not know what she is talking about.

He has it. It is on the phone in his pocket, in high definition, four minutes and eleven seconds of it. He was there for none of it.

This has been happening for a while now and he has begun to notice a shape to it. There is a version of him that records and a version of him that lives, and the recording one has been doing most of the shifts.

Brother, come and stand by the door with me a minute. Because there is a line in a psalm about where joy actually lives, and I do not think it is where you have been storing it.

Fulness of joy has an address, and it is not a file

David ends the sixteenth psalm with one of the most concentrated sentences in the whole book.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.Psalm 16:11

In thy presence. Not in the memory of it. Not in the record of it. The joy is located somewhere, and the somewhere is a presence, which is to say a place where two parties are actually both there.

That is the mechanic, and it is worth having, because it explains something that has been bothering you without you being able to name it. You have four minutes and eleven seconds of your daughter's play and none of the joy of it. The file is not the thing. It never was. Joy does not survive being stored, because joy is not information, it is what happens between two people who are both present.

You are being invited into a presence rather than a record, and the fulness in that verse was never available to a man watching through glass. That is not a poetic reading of an old psalm; Psalm 16:11 puts the fulness inside a presence and nowhere else, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes David's sentence and stands it up in a school hall that smells of poster paint. What you have been collecting was never the thing you were hungry for.

Now let me say the harder half, because I do not think the phone is the problem and I am not going to insult you by pretending it is.

The phone is a symptom. Underneath it is a habit of standing slightly outside your own life so that you can manage it. It is not a vice. For most men it starts as competence: somebody has to be watching the exits, somebody has to have the record, somebody has to be the one who is not swept up. And it works, and it hardens, and after a while there is no version of you left that just stands in a room and is in it.

You have permission to be in the room without managing it, and He has never once asked you to be the one holding the camera. The written word says be still, and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes stillness an actual possibility in a man rather than an instruction he cannot obey. The stillness there is not passivity. It is the ending of the management.

What presence actually costs, which is less than you think

Here is a thing worth knowing about attention, said plainly.

Presence is not intensity. This is where most people go wrong when they try to be more present: they try to feel more, harder, and it lasts about four minutes and then they are exhausted and back behind the glass.

Look at how Scripture handles it. When God wants to teach a whole nation to be present with Him, He does not hand them an emotional target. He gives them a meal, a rhythm, a stone set up by a road, a day off. Physical, ordinary, low intensity things that put a body in a place.

Presence is a matter of location, not of temperature. Where is your body, and are you in it. That is the whole question, and it is a much smaller ask than the one you have been failing.

You are already in possession of the only thing presence requires, which is a body in a room. Acts 17:28 says in Him we live, and move, and have our being, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that a live fact in a man standing in a coat by a door rather than a philosophical sentence in a sermon. You do not have to generate anything. You have to be where you already are.

And here is the last piece, because you have a mouth and it turns out to do more than narrate.

Jesus said in Matthew 17:20 that faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, is enough to move it. He named the smallest seed in the region. Not the strength of what you feel at a school play. That a person opens their mouth and says what God has said. You have that standing because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and speaking is the appointed way this works. We flip the switch. He sends the current.

The breakthrough

So here is where we are.

You have four minutes and eleven seconds of your daughter's play, and you missed the part your wife loved, and the shape of it has been the shape of a lot of things lately.

You are in the room right now, and being in it is the entire assignment. Psalm 16:11 puts the fulness of joy inside a presence and Acts 17:28 says you already live and move and have your being in Him, and it is His Spirit who makes those two one fact in a man rather than two verses in a book. What comes of it, how much you feel and when, belongs to Him. I will not put a date on God and I will not sell you a feeling.

You do not have to overhaul anything. No rule about phones, no system, no promise to be a better father from Monday. Say the words below in the crush by the door if that is where you are.

If the flatness has gone somewhere darker, and staying safe is genuinely in question for you, please call emergency services or a crisis line where you live, and get another person physically near you. That is not a failure of faith and it is not a break in this. It is one honest way of refusing to be alone with a night.

Declare this over yourself

The ground under these words is Christ in you and you in Him, given to you and not achieved by you, so say them at the volume of an ordinary sentence. Scripture is what puts them in your mouth and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live. How much you feel today belongs to Him, and none of it is a mark against you.

  1. Screen I have been living behind, you are down, and my eyes are on the room I am standing in. His word says in Thy presence is fulness of joy, and a presence is a place where both parties are actually there.
  2. Job of managing my own life from just outside it, you are finished in the name of Jesus. I stand on the word that says be still and know, and the stillness in it is the end of the managing and not the end of the loving.
  3. Lord, You are here in this hall that smells of poster paint. Your word says in You I live and move and have my being, and I am standing in the crush by the door saying out loud that I am here.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
