Ordered From Evening Until Morning

The lamp on the shelf is an old oil one and it is not a decoration and it is not a museum piece, it is used, and the glass has that clouding at the top that only comes from being lit a great many times.

Dusk. That short stretch when the room goes blue before anybody turns anything on.

Three of them. His brother in law came for a form and stayed for a meal, which is the standard sequence in this house.

He lights it. He does this most evenings and has for a long time and could not tell you exactly when it started, and the room comes up warm the way it always does, and somebody says something about how much better that is than the ceiling light, and they are right.

And here is what he has been sitting with lately.

He has come to believe that whatever is lit in him depends on him. Not theologically. He would tell you the right things about grace and mean every word. But operationally, in the place where a man actually lives, he believes that if he forgets, it goes out.

So he does not forget. He is careful. And the carefulness has become a weight he could not put a number on, and he has begun to be very tired of it, and to feel that tiredness is itself a kind of failure.

Sit down, brother. Because there is an instruction in Leviticus about a lamp, and I want you to notice who supplies the oil and who is standing there in the morning.

Ordered from evening until morning

The lamp in the tabernacle. The instruction is repeated twice, in Exodus and in Leviticus, which in that literature means it matters.

Without the vail of the testimony, in the tabernacle of the congregation, shall Aaron order it from the evening unto the morning before the LORD continually.Leviticus 24:3

Three things.

Shall Aaron order it. A named priest. One man, whose job this is.

From the evening unto the morning. Through the whole night. The lamp burns in the dark, which is the only time a lamp is any use.

Continually. Not occasionally, not when there is a festival. As a permanent arrangement.

Now here is the part that matters for a careful man. The oil for that lamp did not come from Aaron. Look at the verse just before it: the people brought pure oil olive beaten for the light. And it did not come from the people either, ultimately, because they did not make olives.

So there is a lamp that burns all night, ordered by a priest, on oil supplied by a whole nation, grown by nobody in the room.

You are supplied for a lamp you were never asked to fuel, and the priest in that chapter tends what other hands provide. That is not a stretch of a ceremonial instruction; Leviticus 24:3 gives the ordering to Aaron and Leviticus 24:2 has the oil brought by everybody else, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a tabernacle detail and stands it up in a room at dusk with an old lamp on a shelf. The burning has never once run on the person who lights it.

Now the belief you are actually living by, and let me put it beside the thing you would say out loud.

You would say grace. You would say it clearly and you would be right.

And you are operating on the assumption that if you forget, it goes out. That is not hypocrisy. That is what happens to a conscientious man over years: the doctrine stays correct in the head and the practice quietly becomes a maintenance contract, and nobody notices because the results look the same from outside.

The difference shows up exactly where you are now, which is tiredness that feels like failure.

You have been running a maintenance contract while believing something better, and the tiredness you feel is what that gap costs. Hebrews 4:10 says he that is entered into his rest hath ceased from his own works, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes ceasing an actual available condition rather than a doctrine a man agrees with while working.

The Priest who does not forget

One more thing, and it is the one to take to bed.

Aaron was a man and men forget. The whole arrangement in Leviticus depends on a human being turning up at the right hour with the right oil, night after night, for a lifetime, and then his sons after him.

That is exactly why the letter to the Hebrews spends so long on the point that there is now a Priest who does not die, does not hand over, and does not need replacing.

So the lamp is still ordered from evening until morning. It is simply no longer ordered by anybody who can forget.

You have a Priest who does not forget, and the ordering of that lamp passed to Somebody who does not hand over at the end of a shift. Hebrews 7:24 says this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes continueth ever a practical fact about a Tuesday rather than a doctrinal category.

And here is the last piece, because you have a mouth and it works at dusk with a match in your hand.

Jesus said in Matthew 17:20 that faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, is enough to move it. The smallest seed there is. Not how reliably you have remembered. That a person opens their mouth and says what God has said. You have that standing because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and speaking is the appointed way this works. We flip the switch. He sends the current.
